A lot of customers out there want to see that their lawn at home is tidy and neat, however, many people don’t want to spend time cutting, weeding and watering their lawn. Artificial grass is a lawn that doesn’t require constant attention, so it will always look attractive. No matter what the climate is, whether it’s hot or if it rains too much, this lawn will always be in pristine condition. For those that are wondering, what is the difference between synthetic grass and artificial grass, these terms have become synonymous over the years to describe the same product. The difference between real and artificial grass is the burning issue.

So how much does it cost to lay artificial grass? The upfront costs are fairly substantial, between five and $20 per square foot, however, it lasts for about 20 years after that. You can expect to lay it down for about half a dollar per square foot. If you do all the numbers you’ll find that after the initial investment it really isn’t all that expensive.

What To Look For When Buying Artificial Grass

When planning to purchase a synthetic alternative, there are a lot of things that you need to know. Here are some of the things you need to look out for.

Colour

Synthetic lawns can be purchased in 1 to 3 colors. You can either purchase several shades of color, making the product look more realistic, or opt for a monochromatic style.

Fiber

The lawn is composed of plastic fibers. You can either buy polypropylene or polyethylene. Depending on what material there is, the lawn will be either stiffer or softer. Also check for the UV resistance, a parameter which determines how resistant the fiber is to ultraviolet radiation. If it can resist for longer, it will last longer too.

Infill

This is one of the key components of installing an artificial lawn. So what is infill for artificial grass? Infill gives support to individual grass blades so that they can stand upright. It is what gives your product the natural feel, look and bounce. Infill protects the fabric mash below that creates the foundation of the turf.

Other Physical Characteristics

Look at the pile height to determine how much filler is required. You need to know exactly what type of sand for artificial grass infill is needed and how much of it you require. The more resilient than a lawn is, the less likely it will knock out any of this aggregate matter. Permeability is also important to consider. This number, usually measured in liters, is going to show you how well the synthetic lawn will drain any water.

Installing Artificial Grass

Everyone wonders about how to install artificial grass and It’s quite simple – if you want to know how to lay artificial grass then follow these simple steps.

  1. Work out the area
  2. It is important to work out the area where you will be laying your product. Calculate the height and the length so that you can order the right amount for your needs.

  3. Clear up
  4. It doesn’t matter whether you install a synthetic lawn on concrete or dirt, you need too clear the area completely. On dirt, remove any shrubs and plant material that you can see. If installing on concrete, make sure that the area has been thoroughly cleaned and brushed down. Essentially, anything that would create an uneven surface needs to be removed.

  5. Performance padding
  6. If you’re going to lay your artificial product on concrete, rollout 5 to 10 mm performance pads. These pads will help cushion the area and can be installed by joining them together with tape or glue. If you’re going to put your artificial grass on dirt, you can replace the performance padding with sand.

  7. Lay your artificial grass
  8. If you’re wondering how to install artificial grass on dirt and how to do it on concrete, once you’ve completed the previous steps it is much the same. Clean the area that you wish to cover and roll out your turf. It is best to leave around 50 mm on each side of the synthetic lawn so that you can trim it off easily. After about three hours, it should be ready for the next steps. Cut your turf up with a sharp Stanley knife to fit it to size.

  9. Join everything up
  10. Join up each part of turf using a good quality tape or glue. There are a different amount of adhesives that you can use to fix your artificial product down. Securing your turf can be done either with dabbing adhesive to the base and the back of the grass or you can lay down your lawn and weigh it down with other garden accessories, such as plant pots. On dirt, you can pin the turf to the ground.
